Chris Ware, Cut outs

Cut outs

Within Chris Ware’s book he has an ‘interactive’ feature whereby you can build elements of the lives of the characters. For Jimmy Corrigan there is a cut out of his house and in other work is Jay and Christine and their rocket. Each cut out has a detailed set of instructions, for adults, in order for them to making the cut outs themselves at home from the book. This example is from building stories and you can see the simple layout and how you need to cut out the shape in order to build the building.

Looking at these, this is a sample of my own work in the style of Chris Ware, I went with a cruise ship and a small back story to go with it similar to Chris Ware’s style. Along with this I also put similar detailed instructions so that it was shown how to build the ship as well. The initial images show the progress of the ship as a prototype and then the final cut outs and product.

Here is the first prototype of my cutouts:

This is the final template layout, along with instructions in order to build the ship which as a final product which is displayed at the image at the bottom of the screen.

All of Chris Ware's cut outs have detailed instructions as they are made for adults to assemble. I went with a theme similar that had a storyline and could make a finished result. I decided to base the theme on a a boat that you build in order your get away.

Here is the final made product using the instructions and templates.
